Captain George Withers

Captain George Withers is a career soldier. An officer in the Second Battalion of the Coldstream Guards, he was currently stationed at Victoria barracks, Windsor, a quarter of a mile from the castle. He is a decorated veteran of the Great War, during which he met Doctor Frederick Bartlett.

George has one younger sister - Anna Newman - who is married to a Mr Albert Newman, a respectable chemist, they have no children and live in London. His parents are both dead. With his father dying, this made the still young George the 'man of the household', giving him a strong sense of responsibility towards his mother (who only died a few years ago) and sister.

Captain Withers seems very proud to be British and it is readily apparent that he has a strong love of King and Empire. He seems to have few ambitions beyond being a good officer and brother, and takes these responsibilities very seriously.

• Doctor Frederick Bartlett, whom he meet during the war and has remained good friends with.
• Major Edward Danby, his commanding officer during the Great War.
• Percy Whiteman, an old school friend who lives on a small farm near Bath.
